Lithium-ion batteries, which came into commercial use in the early 1990s, have a very high energy density and are less likely than most batteries to lose their charge when not being used -- a property called self-discharge.

Because of their light weight and low maintenance requirements, lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electronic devices such as laptop computers. Some experts believe that lithium-ion batteries are about as close as science has yet come to developing a perfect rechargeable battery, and this type of battery is the best candidate for powering the electric cars of the near future.

A variation on lithium-ion batteries, called lithium-ion polymer batteries, may also prove valuable to the future of EVs. These batteries may eventually cost less to build than lithium-ion batteries; however, at the present time, lithium-ion polymer batteries are prohibitively expensive.

The cheapest and simplest kind of 12 volt car battery charger is the trickle charger. This uses a small electrical transformer to drop down the 110v or 220v AC mains voltage in your home to a little more than 12 volts DC current that can be used to fully charge your auto battery overnight overnight. One of these lightweight trickle chargers may need 12 hours or longer to fully charge your battery, so it isn't going to be any use to you if it's 7:30 AM, and your battery is flat, and you have to be at work by 8:30 AM.

There are numerous middle-range auto battery chargers as well. Usually they have a High and a Low setting, or they might be marked with two or three settings for different charging rates - such as 2 amps slow charge, 4 amps medium charge or 8 amps and higher for a fast battery charge. The higher the maximum charge rate, the larger the built-in electrical transformer needs to be, and the bigger, heavier and more expensive the battery charger itself will be.

Then there are several kinds of so-called 'smart' battery chargers at the higher end of your options. Higher in price and in features. These smart chargers have electronic circuitry inside that can examine your 12 volt car battery and determine how healthy or otherwise the battery is. If you have a completely dead, an open circuit or a short-circuited cell in your vehicle battery it will let you know right away. Otherwise you could be trying to charge the battery for days even, to no avail.

These smart chargers are designed to charge a weak battery at a faster rate (higher amps) and to sense automatically - usually by small voltage changes) when the battery has been charged enough.

The devices then switch to a tiny trickle charge that will keep the battery in best-possible condition without over-charging it, An over-charged battery will usually get very hot. This can buckle the metal plates (electrodes) inside and evaporate the liquid electrolyte as hydrogen gas - which can be explosive.

So do look at several choices of possible battery charger for your car, ask plenty of questions, read the manufacturer's brochures and then make up your mind which one is right for you.
