4. Bosch 3912 12-Inch Compound Miter Saw
This miter saw topped our list of the best twelve inch miter saws because of the great motor that it had. There is plenty of power and it runs very smoothly, it is also very quiet.
We also really liked the fence that came with the Bosch 3912, not only was it taller and thicker than those on most other miter saws but it was also easier to adjust.
The miter gauge and the detentes are excellent, they are accurate and they remain firmly locked in place. The cuts are very accurate and the build quality is top notch.
There is not a lot that we can criticize with the Bosch 3912, it is a very good miter saw. It is of professional quality without the price that normally entails so it offers excellent value for the money.
5. DEWALT DWS780 12-Inch Double Bevel Sliding Compound Miter Saw
The Dewalt DWS780 is a very good miter saw and it would be hard to go wrong with it. The best thing about this saw is that it cuts straight and square which makes getting an accurate cut very easy.
In fact this is the best saw that we have come across in this regard. We also liked the fact that the bevels are very easy to adjust. One of the best features is that you can adjust the saw up to sixty degrees to the right and fifty degrees to the left which makes it much more convenient to use than saws that only allow adjustments to forty five degrees.
The biggest negative that we have about this saw is the dust bag. It works great and is one of the best dust collection systems that we have come across but the bag is located in an awkward spot that prevents you from putting the saw right up against the wall, this is a big problem if you have small workshop.
This is a great saw but it is also on the expensive, there are other options that are almost as good at a considerably lower price. This is not to say that you shouldn't buy the Dewalt DWS780 just that you should compare it to the other options first. This might be the best sliding compound miter saw.
6. Hitachi C12FDH 15 Amp 12-Inch Dual Bevel Miter Saw
This is saw is one of the best values that you will find when it comes to 12 inch miter saws. It is accurate and has plenty of power, it is also easy to adjust.
There are saws that do all of these things a little bit better but none that are in the same price range.
This makes it ideal for the average user who does not need a professional quality miter saw, although most professionals will be quite happy with it as well.
The only real criticism that we have with the Hitachi C12FDH is that the blade that it comes with is not of the best quality so you will likely want to replace it. Other than that we are quite happy with this saw in terms of quality for the price.
7. Makita LS1221 12-Inch Compound Miter Saw Kit
The Makita LS1221 is a very well built saw that should last for many years with no problem.
It has plenty of power and the motor is very smooth, although it does make a bit of a strange sound.
The cuts are accurate and the bevels and miters are easy to adjust. All in all it is a very good saw.
A couple of minor criticisms that we have are that the bevel gauge is difficult to read and that blade is a real hassle to have to change. Other than these minor issues the Makita LS1221 is a quality saw that represents a good value for the money.
8. Bosch 5312 12-Inch Dual Bevel Slide Compound Miter Saw
The Bosch 5312 is a professional quality miter saw that is clearly intended for use on the job site.
It is very accurate and has plenty of power. Adjustments are easy to make and they stay firmly locked when they are made.
Like all Bosch tools the build quality is top notch so the saw is very durable. This saw is also well designed for use on the job site as it has two handles that make it much easier to carry than most other miter saws.
That being said it is a big miter saw so it can be a bit of a pain to have to move it around. The only real complaint that we have about the Bosch 5312 is that the blade that it comes with is not up to the same level as the rest of the saw. Other than that if you are in the market for a professional quality miter saw this is the one that we recommend.
9. Makita LS1216L 12-Inch Dual Slide Compound Miter Saw with Laser
This is a great compound miter saw for the job site. In fact that is what it is designed for. It is probably not a great option for use at home as the stand that it comes with will probably take up too much room in your shop for most people but for use on a job site it is ideal.
Like all Bosch tools this one is well built and has plenty of power. The saw runs smoothly and makes accurate cuts. The saw is not particularly loud, there are quieter saws but this one is good in that regard.
Adjustments are fairly easy to make so you should not have a huge problem here. The only major issue that I had with this saw is that it is quite frankly too complicated. Setting it up every time that I get to the job site can be hassle because there are so many things that need to be adjusted.
Overall I would say that this is a pretty good saw for the jobsite. It would not be my first choice, it would be ranked higher if it were but you will likely not be disappointed if you got this one.
Quick Tips On Buying Mister Saws
Think of what actually makes up a miter saw. The following issues/features will determine what miter saw you might choose, so read carefully. If you're new to miter saws, this will be a great educational guide for you. Seasoned miter saw users may want to skip right to the products. Here are the miter saw issues/features to look for/be aware of for those new to these types of saws.
Do You Need A Basic Or Compound Miter Saw?
A basic miter saw is capable of making basic cuts to wood and other materials. These basic miter saws have no bevel and no slide. It's just a basic saw.
A compound miter saw is more advanced, and will have a bevel, a slide, and other accessories to make more advanced and precise cuts. They can have single or dual bevels and be available with a wide variety of blade diameters. It's best to have a compound miter saw instead of a basic one because you never know what project you may need to complete. Better safe than sorry.
Amps Of Power
15 amps is generally the amperage of choice for professionals and home cutting enthusiasts alike. A miter saw with this amperage is powerful enough to make quick work of difficult materials and this amperage of motor generally lasts substantially longer than less powerful models.
3,000 to 4,000 RPM speed is the industry standard for miter saws. This RPM speed offers the highest level of performance and presents the least amount of difficulty in completing projects.
How big the blade is will determine what kind of projects you'll be able to accomplish. In most cases, you'll want a bigger blade, rather than a smaller one. With a larger blade, you can get all the small jobs done but you get the added benefit of being able to accomplish really big jobs as well. Look for miter saws with a blade diameter of 12 inches. This blade diameter is capable of handling both large and small jobs with ease.
Bevel Capacity And Positive Stops
Being able to tilt the blade to the left and the right to make cuts, also called beveling, is important to most miter saw users. Generally, left/right tilt degree angles of 0-60 degrees is sufficient for most projects.
You'll also want to find a miter saw that has "positive stops", meaning preset degrees where the blade locks into position. For example, for a specific project you may need to make a series of 22.5 degree and 31.6 degree cuts. Having exact "positive stops" in these positions will allow you to make quick work of the project.
Manufacturer and Warranty
Be sure to buy from a good manufacturer. Some great manufacturers of miter saws in the market today are Bosch, Makita, DeWalt, Hitachi, Ryobi, Milwaukee, and Skil. Also, you should ensure that your purchase comes with a long lasting warranty. Making the purchase will mean nothing if the product is defective from the factory.
